Hypothetical question: if Congress hired a debt counselor, what would the first piece of advice be?

Posted by admin on April 27th, 2011 and filed under debt counselors | 25 Comments »

Has anybody ever consulted a debt counselor?

For those deep in credit card debt and wanting to get out, wouldn’t the FIRST piece of advice that a counselor will offer is to STOP USING YOUR CREDIT CARDS? Stop accumulating debt? Once you do that, wouldn’t they tell you to establish a realistic budget that lets you live within your means?

You ask such great questions! : )

First advice would be to cut up the credit cards and lock up just one card for a major emergency, but put it in a hard to get place like a safety deposit box.
2nd would be to stop any excess spending and create a budget, If you are living in a place you can no longer afford, then downsize and try to keep monthly/annual expenses at an affordable level.
Next, start paying down all debt by concentrating on one thing at a time. But, always make at least the min. monthly payment on everything. Think carefully about impulse buying and look at everything you do.
    No eating out.
    No "shopping" trips
    No vacations
No car rides that are unnecessary
If you eat out, set a price limit

I could go on, but it would get redundant.

I don’t see our government doing much of this at all, do you?

Should I use a credit counselor for a total debt of about 4,000?

Posted by admin on March 20th, 2011 and filed under debt counselors | 3 Comments »

I’m now able to start making payments to creditors whom i’ve left in the dark during the last year or so when I was unemployed… whats the best way to go about clearing my debts? Calling themindividually? using credit counselors?

You don’t want to make monthly payments on debts that have already defaulted. Doing so will not reactivate your accounts and give you good credit again. Debt collectors don’t want to be paid this way anyway.
Save your money and offer to settle the accounts in full in a one time payment, starting @ 25%. Don’t contact debt collectors until you have enough money to do this. You don’t need to hire credit counselors to do this as you can make your own offers.
If your debts involve defaulted credit card debts, paying them back will not fix your credit rating.
